Experience
I worked in one suburban school which had an extremely wide range of abilities from those new to English to those who have now achieved doctorates in English Literature; I have worked in two very inner city schools where students were really struggling and literacy levels were very low; my last school was a mid-range comprehensive school and my current school is huge mix of abilities with some students from very deprived areas who work really hard. This has enabled me to work across the board and develop skills to deal with highly intelligent students and those who are really struggling.
Last year (2022-23) my tutees’ grades were as follows for English Language and Literature:

One of my students with very special needs moved from 3s in the November mock to 5s in her real GCSE.

One student moved from a double 6 to a double 9 by the summer.

Two students moved from a 4 to a 6 by summer.

One other student moved from 3s to a 5s.
All students were able to move to their next stage and all valued my input and passion for my subject.
I am extremely well qualified with an MA in English Literature, a PGCE and a Bachelor’s degree in English. While teaching secondary English for twenty years and examining for key exam boards for ten, I have gained invaluable experience of how to get students to engage with a proven track record of excellent results both in the classroom and through tutoring. I know exactly what is required of students and how early they need to prepare. Having coached my own dyslexic child through English, I have many skills to offer to boost students’ grades in their time of need.
I am quick to establish where the gaps are in a child's knowledge and which skills need developing. I have found that planning is the key to success. My one-to-one lessons within a group consist of lessons tailored to individual students but each of them working on their own course of study. One-to-one within a group enables the child to get on without feeling watched, while I can discuss the next steps with another child. There could be up to 4 students in the room at one time.
I will also be offering groups online. These students will be at the same stage in their learning and benefit from each others’ input.
